Snowed In in Indianapolis: Sledding, Hot Cocoa, and Our Flu Season Survival Tips

Snowy Indianapolis neighborhood during an arctic winter storm with warm lights glowing from homes

Indianapolis got hit-hit with the winter arctic storm they warned us about. ❄️ The kind of snow that makes your driveway look like a ski slope and your car question its life choices. As a city, we’re still pretty snowed in — but we’re crossing fingers (and sprinkling salt like it’s a blessing) that tomorrow we finally start thawing out and getting back to normal.

When the roads turn into a “no thank you,” we do what any reasonable Midwest family does: we lean into the cozy.

Our Snow Day: Sledding, Cocoa, and Catching Up

Since we can’t exactly “run errands” without becoming a human snowplow, we turned the day into a full-on family snow daysledding, hot cocoa, and the kind of laughter that makes your cheeks hurt.

Then we came inside, peeled off 47 layers, and I knocked out a bunch of admin work that’s been staring at me like, “Remember me?” (It did not win the staring contest. 😌)

Flu A Update: It Visited… Everyone 🙃

And because winter loves being dramatic, Flu A officially made its way through our household — and it truly did not leave anyone out. Like an uninvited guest who eats all your snacks and refuses to go home.

The good news? We’re officially on the other side of it now. 🙌

Flu Season Tips to Keep in Your Back Pocket

Not medical advice — just the things that helped us stay semi-human and might help you too as flu season keeps doing the most:

  • Hydration, hydration, hydration: Water, herbal tea, broths… if it’s warm and soothing, it’s your new best friend.

  • Warm saltwater gargle: Old-school, slightly annoying, surprisingly helpful.

  • Honey + warm tea: Cozy and calming (skip honey for kids under 1 year old).

  • Humidifier / steamy shower: Helps with congestion and makes you feel like you’re in a wellness retreat… in your bathroom.

  • Rest like it’s your job: Sleep isn’t lazy — it’s strategy.

  • Wipe down the “germ highways”: Phones, remotes, door handles (basically anything everyone touches 400 times a day).

If you’re feeling off, don’t try to power through like it’s a personality trait — take it easy and reach out to your healthcare provider when needed.
